NYU Announces New School with Focus on Mathematics, Computing, and Data Science

This past week, NYU President Linda Mills announced the creation of a new school at the university. The Courant Institute School of Mathematics, Computing, and Data Science marks a significant extension of the Courant Institute.

According to Mills, the school will “build on NYU’s preeminence in mathematics, applied mathematics, data science, and computer science.” Mills added that the move helps prepare students for the technological world, an inevitably growing sector in New York City and across the United States.

The school is named after Professor Richard Courant, who first established the aforementioned mathematics institute several decades ago. Courant was notable for bringing refugees with mathematical skills and backgrounds to the university.

The school will combine three separate academic departments, including the Department of Mathematics, the Center for Data Science, and a newly expanded Department of Computer Science. The departments will be linked through the Courant Institute and the Tandon School of Engineering.

Until at least the summer of 2026, Gérard Ben Arous, Silver Professor of Mathematics and current head of the Courant Institute, will serve as the inaugural dean.
